![]() ![]() ![]() With that said, in the hands of an experienced user some of these utilities can be quite useful and make easy work of junk data and unwanted startup items. PC cleaning utilities have their uses, but the promise of quick fixes and enhanced performance are mostly bunk. That’s just gross, and unforgivable in my book. And PC Booster set up a scheduled task that caused the application to pop-up onscreen asking users to register and buy the full version. ![]() Ashampoo WinOptimizer disabled the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service, which really should have remained enabled on a multitouch-capable test system. Two of the tools, namely PC Booster and Ashampoo WinOptimizer, had a couple of unwanted consequences as well. I compiled the results below so you can see for yourself. In terms of recovered disk space, CCleaner was able to purge slightly more junk data from the system, but the differences between the apps were negligible. Presumably, that’s because in addition to cleaning up junk files it shut down a few services running in the background. In fact, according to PCMark 7 system performance went down ever so slightly after running SlimCleaner, CCleaner, and PC Booster, though boot time was improved somewhat with Ashampoo WinOptimizer. Your mileage may vary, but it made for a poor first impression on WIndows 8.ĬOMODO System Utilities v4 didn’t function properly on our Sony VAIO Tap 20 Windows 8-based PC.Īll of the other utilities worked well enough, but they didn’t have a meaningful impact on performance. (To be fair, Comodo does not list Windows 8 as a supported OS.) The utility would launch properly, but never fully initialize or scan the system properties, so no cleanup options became available in its interface. COMODO System Utilities wouldn’t run properly on the Windows 8 test machine, so I do not have any before and after numbers for that tool. Our benchmark tests were conclusive, but ultimately uneventful. Storage duties are handled by a Hitachi 750GB, 5400 RPM hard drive and the system is outfitted with a 20-inch touchscreen that packs a native resolution of 1600-by-900. The system is powered by an Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz processor (2.6GHz with boost) with integrated Intel HD 4000 series graphics and 4GB of RAM. The test machine is an off-the-shelf Sony VAIO Tap 20 Windows 8 system that hasn’t been maintained at all for the last few months, save for automatically installing Windows Updates when necessary. To replicate real-world conditions I stuck to a straightforward test routine while evaluating the effects of each of the cleanup utilities featured here. ![]() The other tools can be used to manually tweak startup items as well, which might be more palatable to experienced PC users who want to get their hands dirty. One of them-namely Ashampoo WinOptimizer-will also automatically check for superfluous startup items or services and disable them to free up memory and improve boot times. They also scan the registry to find any unnecessary keys that can be removed. They scan your system for junk or useless data that’s just wasting space and mark it for deletion. SlimCleaner uses community-sourced information to determine what data is safe to purge from a system.Īll of the utilities featured here work in roughly the similar fashion. For reference, 2830 issues were found on our test machine and it would cost $35 for the full version that would supposedly fix them all. That’s just not enough to be useful in the real world. See, the free edition of PC Booster gives users the ability to fix only 15 issues. COMODO System Utilities wasn’t too far behind at 13.2MB and the free edition of PC Booster came in at a paltry 2.7MB, but it turned out to be severely limited in its usefulness. Both are completely free for personal use, don’t include any useless or bloated software, sport simple interfaces, and weigh in at only 718K (SlimCleaner) and 4MB (CCleaner).Īshampoo WinOptimizer was the largest of the bunch at 16.9MB and had the most complicated interface. SlimCleaner and CCleaner are the no-nonsense members of the group. Piriform CCleaner is best suited to experienced PC users that want to know what they’re cleaning from their systems. ![]()

If he hits all those incentives his cap hit will be $46m in 2024 and the Seahawks would be in the red for cap room in 2024. Just a reworking so it is more cap-friendly to the Seahawks in 2024, and probably rewards Geno if he has a strong 2023. We’re not talking about a lowered contract necessarily. If you’ve enjoy the blog and want to support the site via Patreon - ( click here) It happened when it happened - and it’s not likely to be a precursor to anything else. That makes me think the Nwosu extension is simply a sign the team really rates him and sees him as part of their core group moving forward, with the timing of the deal being an irrelevance. It’s just really difficult to identify a hulking defensive tackle who can solve what is clearly Seattle’s biggest need - a veteran nose tackle presence. If there is a decent financial saving in 2023, it will open up the possibility of a roster move over the coming weeks. There are ways to make savings (Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs, Geno Smith, Will Dissly) but it’s worth noting that, already, they’re going to be up against the cap next year. They only had a projected $23.1m available before this deal was announced. This will significantly impact the Seahawks’ cap space for 2024. The Seahawks retain a player they like now without any chance of him going somewhere else next March. Nwosu eliminates the risk of having a down year and reaching free agency with a reduced market. ![]() It’s possible both parties have simply reached a happy medium. Another productive year could’ve sky-rocketed his value even further. Nwosu, meanwhile, doesn’t get to feel the benefit of reaching free agency and testing the market. A deal done in March, however, could’ve provided much needed money to spend. The Seahawks will probably get some cap relief but without any obvious ways to improve their biggest flaw (interior D-line). However, coming off a productive 2022, it also felt like the player had all of the leverage.Īn extension now feels slightly odd for both parties. He will need to justify the salary - and the Seahawks will need to find a way to get the most out of their investment particularly in Boye Mafe and Derick Hall if both are set to be rotational cogs.Īt the start of the year his 2023 cap hit looked like a clear lever to create more cap space through an extension. Nwosu will presumably tie up one of the outside linebacker/EDGE spots now at this cost. Having spent three second round picks on his position recently, this further investment is interesting. If we’re being honest, Nwosu is a good not great player at a position where they’ve heavily invested through the draft. $32m in guarantees and $59m total over three years looks steep but we’ll need to see what the reality is. The other side of it though will be the timing and the raw numbers. He’s a good age, appears to be emerging as an influential contributor and he produced 9.5 sacks last season. On the one hand, it’s perfectly understandable to extend the contract of a player who won’t even turn 27 until late December. It feels like there are a few layers to this news. He earned his first Pro Bowl.Uchenna Nwosu has committed his future to Seattle Smith led them to a nine-win season and a playoff berth. Fun, fun, fun.īut Nemesis was also characterized by very pretty scenery that went back and forth between ruins, grand buildings and industrial areas seemingly at random, an overseeing figure with a spooky voice, and also had a mystery plot you had to piece together as you went along, and that’s mainly why I’m reminded more of it than Portal by Talos Principle. Nemesis, on the other hand, made the some would say misguided attempt to use the same setting for a serious, dramatic tale about forbidden love, murder, abuse and betrayal. It was kind of the black sheep of the Zork family, which were mainly fairly light-hearted adventure games taking the whimsical attitude of early text adventures and bringing them into a full-on graphical situation. I’ll tell you the game Talos Principle reminds me of more than any other, and that’s Zork Nemesis. But I remember enjoying games like The Journeyman Project, or Labyrinth of Time. It doesn’t so much build a world as vaguely tie together some scraps of ones where the polygon counts are low and the puzzles make no sense. And I suppose I have a certain amount of nostalgia for that particular brand of early-PC-game first-person fudging – click the side of the screen to turn ninety degrees, click the centre to blink ten feet forward – for that unique atmosphere you get from the sense that all the excitement’s either already happened or is going on off-screen and you’re just sweeping up after the fact. It’s like the Silent Hill fog thing – something that wasn’t much more than a way to fudge the parameters that the technology had set for us, but which ended up being such an essential part of the mood it became a signature of the genre. ![]() They wanted to show everyone that they were on the cutting edge of pre-rendered PC graphics, and that meant reducing the game to a prolonged sequence of pretty landscapes with no other characters or anything else that might require animation. All of which reminds me of Myst because Myst and games like Myst created a similar atmosphere, albeit largely because of technical limitations. Talos Principle has this nice atmosphere of loneliness created firstly (and most obviously) by our being alone, collecting scraps of knowledge on the backstory and ongoing events from scattered documents, logs and plain text communication, and secondly by being surrounded by huge, gorgeous environments that really emphasize the fact that you’re the only living thing for miles around. ![]() Croteam seem like an old-fashioned bunch, and just as their main IP Serious Sam calls back to retro shooters, Talos Principle takes a range of influences that go all the way back to the earliest days of PC gaming, and a little property called Myst. But I do think it’s another symptom of gaming having no long-term memory that Portal seems to be the only point of reference people have for the genre of first-person puzzle games. I’d argue it’s virtually impossible to make a narrative puzzle game in this day and age without being influenced by Portal, consciously or not. Talos Principle also makes full use of the perspective and 3D space when it has you redirect laser beams around the map, requiring you to be able to eyeball the route the laser takes before you place the reflector.īut I’m not arguing that TP takes no influence from Portal at all, it’s only smart to learn from the greats. ![]() And while there have certainly been first-person games before Portal that were more about puzzles than action, Portal was one of the first to make full use of the 3D space and line-of-sight in the design of the puzzles, where previously a ‘first person puzzler’ merely meant that you stopped moving around every now and again to solve a sliding tile puzzle that was holding a door closed for some reason. I mean, I can’t deny that Talos Principle is also first person and a puzzler. Portal was very very good and very very successful and inevitably people want to try to make that lightning strike twice, but Talos Principle doesn’t group so easily with the more obvious imitators like Quantum Conundrum and Q.U.B.E. ![]() And as I said in the review, I don’t think that’s an entirely fair comparison. A first-person puzzle game, so of course it was going to get compared to Portal.
